Creating the Ultimate Vanity Space: Part I

In the recent months at my house, we have been organizing and organizing all of our things to fit into one space. My boyfriend, Gage, and I have a few projects up our sleeves. We wanted to be able to designate certain areas of the room for each person. Now, we do have a very large room. So there is a lot of opportunity to create individualized space for each person. With my space I decided that I wanted a vanity. Before I always used the top of my dresser as my “vanity” to do my hair and make-up every morning before going to work and school. Since I’ve moved in, Gage has promised me that I would be able to have a vanity like I’ve always dreamed of having.

Finally, that dream has become a reality and we are putting together my new vanity! I am here to share my tips and tricks to building the vanity of your dreams whether you need it for make-up or just to simply get ready really quick in the morning.
  1. Inspiration and Mood Board

This is the Pinterest board I created for my make-up vanity. I find it super helpful to get inspiration before starting any project.

Before I begin any new project in the house, I created a mood board on Pinterest. I search whatever it is I am looking for any ideas that speak to me on that board. Before, I was using an old dark dresser that didn’t have any drawers besides the top ones that worked. In the two drawers on either end of the top row I stored anything that I couldn’t fit into the organizer that sat on top. I tried hanging personal things about on the wall to make it feel more like a personal area for me, but I just wasn’t feeling it. I wanted to make the area look clean and organized. I chose accents that also tie into the rest of the room very well so that it the whole area didn't stick out like it didn't belong. I also wanted to give space on the wall next to the vanity to hang a long wall mirror that I use every single day. I used the things I knew I wanted to accomplish to search for ideas and posted anything I liked to the board I created.

2.Find the Furniture That Speaks to You

Gage and I went to IKEA looking for new furniture. I wanted something where I could slide a chair in instead of it always sticking out. I knew I would need drawers and shelves to organize and decorate the space to fit my needs. I also wanted a good sized mirror with lights so that I didn’t always have to rely on my small mirror sitting on top.

This is the Linnmon/Alex deskthat I picked out from IKEA to use. It's a very simple set up that can easily be customized and is not hard to put together.

I ended up finding a desk with the famous Alex drawers that you see all the beauty YouTubers use. The drawers are very deep and it comes with two different sized drawers making it easy to store large and small products and tools.

Because the desk top is actually larger than it appears in the picture. I bought a mirror one size larger than at the display in the showroom. Hanging materials do come with it and it's not very hard to mount. There was also the Godmorgon mirror that was available in multiple sizes and an LED light strip in the setup we found in the showroom. I adjusted the size of the mirror to the size of the desk. When hanging it, there's actually room around it to hang the LED lights as well.

These shelves are available very cheap and are the same good quality that IKEA always provides.
There are ones similar that are longer available.

Lastly, I bought 3 LACK wall shelvesto hang for displays and extra storage. They are actually much deeper in depth than they appear. Like the mirror it also comes in various sizes as well as another color.

3. Organize!
If you are a make-up hoarder like me, you probably have a ton of palettes, brushes, and singles of make-up items that no matter how little you use it you will never give it up. Even if it’s not the best quality. Organization is key so that each morning when you are getting ready you can quickly and easily find things. I like to use my vanity to do my hair and make-up. So I needed areas to store both things. There are 2 small drawers and 3 large ones to store things in. I divided the space into sections. I could use one of the larger drawers for hair care items like dry shampoo and hair spray. The smaller drawers up top could be used for any single make-up items like lip products or small palettes.

4. It's All About You
I also love putting things on display, so I saved old bottles of things to use on the shelves to decorate along with other small decorating items that represent me and my personality. I cleaned everything off and grabbed plants to add a touch of color to the shelves. Another touch I added is that Gage is always buying me fresh hydrangeas when he can so those are always on my desk. I plan on adding pictures later on since I have some events coming up later this spring.

I hope these tips were helpful for your journey to build your ultimate vanity whatever that may look like. There are links in throughout my post showing what I bought and where I bought it. Remember to not settle until you find what you are looking for! It may take a while but it’ll be worth it in the end. Stay tuned for more installments about this project and other upcoming projects!
