In my last post about creating my ultimate vanity space, when I began to put together the actual vanity that I now use. However, there is more to the project that I want to do. What I am aiming to do is to create an area in the house where my vanity is and that can serve to be my space. Gage has his space for his gaming and I’ll have my space for all my makeup and to get ready in the morning.
Now, we are moving into another bedroom space that has more storage, but there is not enough space for my current vanity space to be put in there. We are moving out of a large room with no door and is more like a multipurpose type room. It’s in the area where all the bedrooms are so it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to make into something like another living room or dining room. The space has 3 defined areas, the entrance to the hallway, the area by the front door, and a back corner area. It’s just a giant L-shaped room that could definitely be used a lot better. In the back corner (the bottom-end of the L-shape) is my area for my vanity. The room is already painted a light grey color which I plan to keep. But before I can begin to put together the area, I need to figure out what exactly I am going to do.
First, I need to start with a color scheme for the area. Something that is neutral and isn’t going to clash too much with however Gage’s game setup looks. The room should be cohesive in color but there needs to be 3 defined spaces throughout. The vanity is completely white and the walls are a light grey. Another neutral color that can be added in is a beige/tan. Nothing that is too overpowering but blends nicely together with the light grey walls and white vanity. All of the blinds in that room are that color so it is something I’ll need to keep in mind when selecting other colors to add.

Creating a Pinterest inspiration board is always my go-to thing when I am trying to come up with ideas especially for a creative project. Previously on this board, I had ideas for what the vanity would look like specifically. Nothing else really mattered. Now, I want to plan for what the space around it is going to look like and add in some color schemes. This area is meant to be a calm space for me to go to whenever I want to relax or I’m getting ready in the morning for class and work. Some really calming colors are neutrals. Neutrals are meant to balance out the space and can be especially helpful to use whenever you want to use a lot of bright and bold colors in one space. Using neutrals only creates a calm relaxing feeling in the space because there is nothing bold standing out. Everything blends together.
Once I have a solid color scheme in mind a move onto adding points of interest that compliment the color scheme.Another thing that I am very drawn to are metallics. They can add an edgy twist to a space and can elevate one that is completely neutral like what I’m going towards. Everything on my Pinterest board doesn’t have to show a vanity or makeup. It can simply be something that has the color scheme that you are interested in or a certain textile that you would like to incorporate. Your Pinterest board is simply meant to be a visual representation as to what you are looking to do for a certain project or idea that you have.
Adding metallic objects is one way. Another thing you can add are textiles and various textures. In this space I want a small couch so I’d need to add a few pillows and also a rug to define the space more since there will be another area that is for gaming and watching tv. These are just a few simple ways to add textures to a space. Pillows, rugs, and event pictures on the wall can add texture and points of interest. Make sure that everything is within the same color scheme so that things look more cohesive despite there being various textures, textiles, and metallic accents.
Also, these things are meant to be accents and not to take over the space entirely. If an object is too overwhelming then you are taking away interest of something else close by. Your eyes should be drawn to the overall space not one item in particular. The basic color scheme needs to be elevated with accents in order to have various points of interest. Inspiration pictures of these things can easily be added to your Pinterest board.
Lastly, one of the things that I will want to do is plan out where I am going to put large pieces of furniture and which direction they are facing. It is important to measure out exactly where you are going to put something. You don’t want to have something be delivered and it be too large or too small for the space. It can be time consuming to find the perfect piece anyways. You don’t want to waste more time returning something because it doesn’t fit the space when you could’ve measured the area before ordering something.
There are going to be 3 big pieces of furniture that I am going to have: a couch, my vanity w/ mirror, and a rug. The vanity and corresponding mirror have already been measured to fit on the wall. On the opposite wall is where I plan to put the couch and then the rug in between. As I measure, I know what size couch and rug to order.
One of the best places I have found to get furniture online is through Wayfair. They have so many designs to choose from so it’s easy to find something to go with your space. There are also sales throughout the year and promotions that allow for free 2-day shipping on certain items. Typically rugs that I’ve gotten on Wayfair have gotten to my house within 2-3 business days. Larger furniture typically takes about 7-8 business days depending on the size. You can take screenshots of things you love and create new pins for your Pinterest board plus leave a link for others to be able to easily find the item as well!
Another helpful idea is to draw out how you want the space to look as far are where everything will go. Try to make the sketch as close as possible but when the day comes that you really start to put everything together, this can really help out. It’s important to keep track of what you are doing and everything you are getting together. When the day to put it all together comes, it’s going to be a lot smoother to do so.
I hope this post was helpful to those of you following me during this project! It can definitely be easy to get overwhelmed when transforming a space into something new. Keep calm and keep decorating!
